To plan your digital strategy we need to start with specific actions – the actions you want current and potential clients to take.

It’s easiest to start by thinking through the real world sales funnels your clients go through now. For example, you put out an advertisement, you get a phone call from a potential client, and you run them through a script. During that script they have questions, you answer those questions. Finally that client realized you and your product are the right solution for their problem – and you make the sale.

What does the digital model of that look like?

Your digital strategy, your website, and everything surrounding it is about leading people through those processes. It’s about generating specific sales funnels that in the end build trust, answer questions and generate sales.

Virtual CTO: A Real World Example

I’ll give you a very relevant example. The website you are on right now.

Most consultant websites have a home page, an about us page, and a services page. I have that too, because it’s what you’re already going to be looking for, but that’s not my sales funnel.  One of my sales funnels is what you are reading right now “Virtual CTO”.

You may have already seen my services and are trying to figure out how those services relate to your business and if you believe I can help you grow your business. “Virtual CTO” gives us some time to spend together. Only having a services page is like putting up a display in a retail window hoping it catches your attention as you pass by. But virtual CTO, that’s where you come in and ask some questions. Right here we get to spend a little time building trust, establishing expertise, and answering questions.

In the real world we focus on serving our customers well to build word of mouth marketing – friends telling friends about your business and products.

What does that look like in the digital world? A lot. Ratings and reviews, friends talking on social media, bloggers and influencers mentioning your brand. The power of “word of mouth” is multiplied on the web and the more you and you’re business are committed to creating raving fans the more important your digital system becomes. The system that turns fans into reviews, shares, likes, and pins.

The first is “reputation management”. These are companies and software that help you get and fix reviews on sites like Google, Yelp, and Facebook.

The second is social media. You don’t have to actively be a social media user, but you should be aware of a few points. You can add social links to make it easy for people to share your message with others. You can use social media monitoring tools to get notified when people are talking about your brand.

There are a few ways to setup a website, but unless you have a very specific need for a specific function I’m only going to talk about SaaS website platforms. Anything else is going to cost more, open your information to hackers, and waste your time.

A simple and functional way to create a website is with landing page software. You don’t even need a traditional website, especially if you’re just starting. A landing page software can be configured to let you work with multiple pages on your own domain. The advantage is that you can easily split-test each page (compare version A the version B) and see what is best connecting with new customers.

Which ones do I recommend?

Simple landing page solutions:

If you’re focused on social media, Wishpond is amazing. It basically is landing pages + email marketing + CRM + social media contests and promotions. I’ve used it with huge success with local businesses.

If not social media, then I’m a big fan of what GetResponse has put together. They are mainly known as an email provider, but their Pro plan includes landing pages, webinars (100 participants), and a CRM. It’s the lowest priced full marketing platform I know of.
